Description: Portuguese is the official language of the CPLP (Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries). However, as much as varieties coexist in all linguistic system, one of them is determined as the standard language, which is designated by standard norm and is granted the status of "correct" language. In the case of Angola, although Portuguese is the official and the instruction language at school, the African native languages are the prominent ones in people’s daily life. In this way, it is natural that Portuguese has been undergoing adaptations as a result of its contact with the native languages, which is reflected in its lexical, phonological and morphosyntactic features. Thus, it is controversial, as some people claim, whether the variant of the Portuguese spoken in Angola (hereinafter, PANG) should be considered as a “wrong” language. One of the distinctions of PANG is observed in its pronominalization system, which shows some differences from the European Portuguese (hereinafter, PE) and from the Brazilian Portuguese (hereinafter, PB). The work of Figueiredo & Oliveira (2013), a pioneer analysis on the pronominal system of one of the varieties of PANG (the Portuguese spoken in the Municipality of Libolo), which was carried out on the oral data collected for the Libolo Project, testifies a morphosyntactic use of the clitic “lhe(s)” distinct from PE and from PB. The authors suggest that Portuguese faced a linguistic change in Angola and strive for the status of variety to PANG. Therefore, we seek to verify whether the oral use of the clitic “lhe(s)” would also be proved in the literary domain. For this purpose, we analyzed its morphosyntactic functions in “Kalú, as garinas e o esquema”, one of the tales included in the book O Fogo da Fala by Boaventura Cardoso. Our results point out to the same findings as in Figueiredo & Oliveira (2013) studies, since there are no distinctions in the uses of the clitic “lhe(s)” in the oral and literary contexts. As a result, it is legitimate that we also follow the proposal of granting the status of variety to PANG.2016-01-01T00:00:00ZOn the Irreconcilable Dualism in Brave New WorldGU, JUNYUAN (辜俊媛)http://oaps.umac.mo/handle/10692.1/992016-06-07T09:13:44Z2015-12-11T00:00:00ZTitle: On the Irreconcilable Dualism in Brave New World
Authors: GU, JUNYUAN (辜俊媛)
Abstract: Utopia has long been a controversial subject in literature. According to Rothstein, Utopia "[represents] an ideal towards which the mundane world must reach" (3). It provides us with a blueprint showing "what this world could be and what should be worked for" (Rothstein 3). Nonetheless, there exists another kind of Utopia that is more complex in the sense that instead of being a potential paradise to be pursued elsewhere, it in fact represents a world where the blueprint has already been realised but without desirable effects. As a "transformation of this-place", Utopia of the kind bears far more ambivalence in nature than does the former one (Rothstein 3). Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley is a perfect example. Unlike the society in 1984, which is certainly a dystopia undesirable to the majority, the fictitious society in Brave New World, of which the World State enjoys the absolute governance, has undeniable stability and economic prosperity, the sacrifice of passions and individuality notwithstanding. Admittedly, one can easily draw a long list as to the drawbacks of the World State, such as the tyranny of the perfect system over individuals, the futile lifestyle and false happiness. Quite peculiar is the fact that all the criticism would eventually counteract one another on closer examination.
In the following sections, six controversial aspects involved in the practice of the World State will be discussed respectively for the purpose of illustrating that those antitheses cannot be easily and distinctly settled, whereby the ambivalent nature of this community can be unveiled.

Authors: MEDEIROS, ANGELA MARIA WONG
Abstract: Concrete definitions regarding the idea of the Absurd have generated controversies since the 19th century. While vastly used in daily life as a synonym of being illogical, unreasonable or foolish, absurdity or absurdism – both nouns are used almost interchangeably, although the latter is more commonly used when being referred to as a philosophical theory – different authors and critics have associated the Absurd with the duality of “love of life and [the] concomitant awareness of the inevitability of death” (Bowker, 48), and the consequences of such dichotomy in the meaning of living. Giving rise to an eponymous branch in fiction (most prominently in theater), absurdist ideas are typical of the Modern period. The aim of this essay is then to provide different views from key figures with respect to the topic mentioned aforesaid and find evidences of the Absurd in literary works studied in the course, presenting, therefore, Romanticism as some sort of precursor to this modern school of thought. Besides documenting such findings, central aspects of Romantic literature such as the sublime and social critique will be explained based on an absurdist perspective. The main works analyzed were the Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole and a series of poems, with emphasis on John Keats and William Wordsworth's writings.2014-01-01T00:00:00Z功能決定形式-探討港澳地區詩型公示語英譯CHEN, XI (陳曦)http://oaps.umac.mo/handle/10692.1/852015-09-14T11:29:06Z2014-01-01T00:00:00ZTitle: 功能決定形式-探討港澳地區詩型公示語英譯
