Title: The variations of soil mechanical and hydrological properties induced by different types of grasses
Authors: IAO, PUI LAM
Abstract: Previous studies show that soil properties are affected by plant and the change of
atmosphere in the shallow soil layers of urban landscape which may affect the stability
of geotechnical infrastructures. Many relevant studies have been carried out to find out
the relationship and the influences to soil suction induced by plants However, many
experiments were designed to be done in laboratory, which may influence and change
the actual factors in natural situation. Also, beside of the influence induced by plant,
grass in the field monitoring is also one of the important influential factors for variations
of soil suction.
A series of laboratory tests and field monitoring tests were performed in this study. Soil
classification test was carried out in the laboratory; Soil infiltration test was done at the
field site to record the permeability variations of the soil under the different type of
grass. Beside of this, the installation of the sensors was participated, and image taking
was also performed. The field test was intended to monitor the variations of soil
properties due to grass activity.2019-05-10T00:00:00ZEffect of microelements (Copper and Zinc) on co-metabolism of TCE with Toluene by Pseudomonas plecoglossicida

Title: Effect of microelements (Copper and Zinc) on co-metabolism of TCE with Toluene by Pseudomonas plecoglossicida
Authors: LOK, KENG SENG(陸景昇)
Abstract: A type of Pseudomonas sp. microorganism separated from a heavily gasoline
contaminated site and determined as Pseudomonas plecoglossicida was assessed for
its aerobic co-metabolic removal of Trichloroethylene (TCE) (10mg/L) using toluene
(150mg/L) as the growth substrate and evaluated the effect of microelements (Copper
and Zinc) on this co-metabolism. The aerobic bioremoval of toluene and TCE
simultaneously was investigated under different concentrations of microelements (1
mg/L, 10 mg/L and 100 mg/L). Results from this study showed that under the
supplementation of microelements at 1mg/L of Cu2+ and 1mg/L of Zn2+, the removal
efficiency for both toluene and TCE was enhanced compared to the results from
higher concentrations of microelements (10mg/L and 100mg/L in this study). With
higher concentrations of microelements, both removal efficiency of toluene and TCE
was enhanced at first and inhibited gradually, except for the concentrations of Cu2+ at
10mg/L and 100mg/L, the removal efficiency of toluene was even inhibited within the
first day.2019-05-11T00:00:00ZAnalysis of the Three-stories Unsymmetrical Outrigger-braced Structure

Title: Analysis of the Three-stories Unsymmetrical Outrigger-braced Structure
Authors: ZHENG, ZONG JIAN (鄭宗健)
Abstract: This project is to study the optimum locations of the outriggers of an outrigger-braced structure with unsymmetrical three-stories. In this project, the governing equations about the compatibility of columns’ axial deformation for the unsymmetrical three-stories outrigger-braced structure are derived, which is based on the method proposed by Er and Iu (2009). Itis an improved version of the method proposed by Smith and Salim (1981) for analyzing the symmetrical outrigger-braced structures. The governing equations about the axial forces in the columns of the three-stories unsymmetrical outrage-braced structures are formulated. Some non-dimensional parameters are introduced when formulating the governing equations about the axial forces in the columns. They can reduce the complexity of the governing equations and more importantly reflect the behavior of the structures in various cases in general. Based on the objective that the top drift of the structure is minimized, the governing equations of the optimum locations of the outrages of the threestories unsymmetrical outrages-braced structures are formulated. Based on the derived governing equations, a computer program is written for the numerical analysis in software Matlab. The influences of the structural parameters on the optimum locations of the structure are studied numerically. It is found through numerical analyses that the optimum outrage locations are mainly influenced by the un-symmetry of the structure. The stiffness of the shear wall core, outrigger and column also influences the optimum locations of outrages. The numerical results are presented with figures under different parameter values and could be referenced in the design of three-stories unsymmetrical outrigger-braced structures.2018-01-01T00:00:00ZIndividual Alpha Peak Frequency Neurofeedback Training Improves Cognitioin: A Sham-Controlled Study in Healthy Adults

Title: Individual Alpha Peak Frequency Neurofeedback Training Improves Cognitioin: A Sham-Controlled Study in Healthy Adults
Authors: LI, BENZHENG (李本正)
Abstract: As reported in many studies, resting individual alpha peak frequency (iAPF) had been shown to positively correlate with cognitive performances. This study aimed to enhance cognition by up-regulating iAPFs in the eyes-closed condition using neurofeedback training (NFT). Before and after all training sessions, cognitive abilities were assessed by the mental rotation and n-back tests. Twenty-eight healthy adults were randomly assigned to a neurofeedback group, where real-time feedbacks of iAPFs were given, and a sham group, where irrelevant placebo feedbacks were provided. Results suggested that iAPFs and performance of the mental rotation test had been significantly increased in the neurofeedback group, while no significant changes were observed in the sham group. The finding suggested the effectiveness of the iAPF NFT on enhancement of cognitive performance.2017-01-01T00:00:00Z
